Berlin - Baldwin: Beginning of Berlin Airlift

Blockade Begins

Many events lead up to the official blockade of West Berlin. All in all the Soviet Union was very intelligent and had a plan, yet little to their knowledge did they fully realize the strength and will power of the Western Powers. The “Little Lift” was just a preview of what would actually going to take place in late June of 1948. Since there was no official ending to the first airlift, C-47s continuously flew in food and supplies for military troops up until June 25. On this date, planes were responsible for transporting items to everyone who lived in West Berlin not only to garrison.

Soviet Reasoning

While many might believe the Soviet’s ultimate goal was to eliminate the military forces in West Germany, their main mission was to change political views to conform to the Soviet's communism. It’s interesting because from an outsider’s view the airlift seems as a solution to remove the Allies. In fact they were pushing a Soviet government  to gain political support. Since the Russians weren’t known for their air force capabilities in World War II, they had seriously undermined the power of the British and American forces to sustain from the spreading of communism. This especially important to the Allies to cease and communist government  from growing.
